Endless Sunflowers, Casseroles and Community

Despite the damp and chilly weather this weekend, Greensboro was full of activity. Friday night I had the pleasure of judging Greenhill Center for NC Art’s Casserole Contest for their First Friday Homemaking opening. Over twelve casseroles were entered into the contest and my friend Mary Lacklen and I tasted each one with care. I asked myself “What makes a casserole a casserole?” and ultimately decided that anything in a casserole dish would count. A spicy jambalaya took the blue ribbon and I survived tasting the most scary tuna noodle.

I was almost too full from casseroles to enjoy a food truck Friday dinner. Almost. We walked over from Fisher Park and enjoyed Bagguettaboutit‘s United Nations (Chicken Chipotle Sausage + Chimichurri Sauce) on the curb of Commerce Place while running into half of Greensboro.  See you there this week?

In the mist and chill, a hundred of Greensboro’s biggest localists trekked out to Sherrie and Harrison Stewert’s “Farm off Church” last night for the second annual Triad Local First Community Table event. It was certainly cold but the view of thousands of sunflowers, sips of local wine from Zeto’s and warmth of friends helped keep everyone smiling. Special thanks and congratulations to all my friends at Triad Local First – particularly Luck, Tyler, Dottie and Maribeth – for all their hard work pulling off the event. More about the fantastic fall dinner prepared by Reto soon!

My firewood is being delivered this morning. Happy Fall Ya’ll. There’s to hoping for toasty Monday!

  1. A casserole, from the French word for “saucepan”,[1] is a large, deep dish used both in the oven and as a serving vessel. The word casserole is also used for the food cooked and served in such a vessel, with the cookware itself called a casserole dish or casserole pan. In British English, this type of dish is frequently also called a bake, coinciding with the cooking technique used to cook casseroles.`
