Looking for an extremely refreshing summer beverage? My friend Masha and I fell in LOVE with the Fresh Homemade Watermelon Aqua Fresca at Mia Apa in Gainesville, Florida. So much that we rushed to my favorite market in Gainesville, Ward’s, and picked up our own 20-ish pound! watermelon to make our own. Making your own Aqua Fresca is a labor of love and can be a little messy but is pretty simple. Basically, you press large chunks of fresh sweet watermelon through a sieve and reserve the juice. We used a meat pounder first and then switched to the bottom of a water glass – most anything will work – get creative! While a blender or food processor might seem like an easy skip, you’ll blend the seeds (which tend to be bitter) and will be more messy (I speak from experience!).
Watermelon Aqua Fresca is very sweet and served best over lots of ice. You can also add a splash of vodka for cocktail hour! We enjoyed ours by the pool! Enjoy it while the watermelons are in season and sold on every corner from the back of a pick-up truck. You’ll rest right into summer with a glass of this fresh juice!
